Arsenal legend Thierry Henry believes it is “unfair” to say the current Gunners team are struggling for goals, as pressure mounts on Mikel Arteta and the club to sign a striker in the transfer window.
Calls for Arsenal to sign a forward have increased of late, following injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka, and cup defeats to Newcastle and Manchester United in which Arteta’s side struggled to take their chances.
Arsenal have scored 43 goals in the league this season, ranking them fifth in that statistic, and are currently six points off leaders Liverpool having played a game more.
But Henry, who spent eight years with Arsenal as a player, winning two Premier League titles and two FA Cups while scoring 228 goals across all competitions during that spell, believes it is unfair to suggest Arsenal are struggling in front of goal.
Speaking at the FWA Gala Dinner which paid tribute to former Gunners teammate Dennis Bergkamp, Henry said: “I think it’s unfair to say that (they’re not scoring enough).
“I like to always remind people that a year ago it was the same debate. Last year people were saying if Arsenal had a number nine they would have been top of the league. For me, it’s always about creating chances.
“You’re in trouble if you’re not creating chances and last year we were creating chances and not putting the ball in the back of the net. This year we are creating less but are very efficient on set pieces.”
Henry was part of the ‘Invincibles’ side which went unbeaten in the league in the 2002/03 season on their way to winning the title.
But he insists fans should not look back to the teams he played in and should focus on the future: “I think it’s unfair if people talk about me or others. That was our time, this is their time. We just have to be supportive of the team.”
