UEFA Plots Radical Overhaul of European Super Cup Format from 2026

The 2025 UEFA Super Cup may have been the last edition played in its traditional one match format.

UEFA's reportedly preparing major shake up to the competition, first introduced in 1972 replacing the annual clash between the Champions league & Europa League winners with 4 team tournament.

Historic 2025 Finale in Italy

This year’s final saw Paris Saint Germain beat Tottenham Hotspur 4 - 3 on penalties after thrilling 2 - 2 draw at the Stadio Friuli in Italy. The victory added PSG’s name to the prestigious roll of honour.

New Vision for 2026 & Beyond

According to the Telegraph, UEFA's considering introducing Super cup featuring four clubs, similar to the Spanish & Italian Super cups. The two European titleholders would be joined by 2 other team with details yet to be finalised.

The competition could also be staged outside Europe with Saudi Arabia and the U.S among potential hosts .. a move aimed at maximising global revenues.

Real Madrid hold the all time record with 6 title ahead of Barcelona & AC Milan (5 each) while Liverpool have 4. Spanish clubs dominate the history of the competition with 17 title shared between Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Valencia and Sevilla.
