Eindhoven played host for a historic evening, as PSV triumphed 3-2 over a much-changed Liverpool side at the Philips Stadion to make their qualification to the next round that little bit sweeter.
In an action-packed first half, familiar face Cody Gakpo gave Arne Slot’s side the lead from the penalty spot in his home city after Joey Veerman fouled Federico Chiesa.
Johan Bakayoko then equalised after a lovely turn and finish, before Harvey Elliott restored Liverpool’s lead after Chiesa’s attempt had been parried into his path.
Goals from Ismael Saibari and Ricardo Pepi then ultimately condemned the current Premier League leaders to their first defeat in Europe this season, before the second half saw 18-year-old debutant Amara Nallo receive a red card after a mere four minutes on the pitch.
Following this huge result, Eredivisie front-runners PSV ended the league phase 14th in the 36-team table to clinch a play-off place. There, they will face either Juventus or Feyenoord. The draw arrives on Friday.
While PSV looked ahead excitedly to the playoffs, Feyenoord’s thoughts of the next round were filled with a little more existential dread.
Despite finishing in the playoffs, Brian Priske’s side failed to replicate their magic form that turned over Bayern Munich and suffered a 6-1 humiliation away at Lille.
Osame Sahroaui took just four minutes to breach the visiting defence, before Gernot Trauner’s own goal nullified Santi Gimenez’s leveller ahead of the interval.
In the second period, the Rotterdammers succumbed to further pressure from the side that had registered wins against both Real Madrid and Atleti as Angel Gomes continued the scoring before the hour. This was followed by a flurry of action that truly signalled Feyenoord’s capitulation.
Jonathan David registered his seventh UCL goal of the term on 74′ before Trauner found the back of his own net yet again just two minutes later. Remy Cabella’s 80th minute signalled the end of an evening to forget for the away side.
That said, the effects will be felt for a few days – as both Justin Bijlow and Santi Gimenez picked up injuries that will most likely see them miss this Sunday’s Klassieker against Ajax in Amsterdam.
Feyenoord will face either PSV or AC Milan in the next round.
