Olympique de Marseille’s interest in Wesley Fofana (24) is no secret. The Chelsea defender revealed in an interview earlier this season that his boyhood club, OM, had made an attempt to sign him during the transfer window last summer. Despite admitting to being tempted by the proposal put forward by sporting director Medhi Benatia, the Frenchman made the choice to remain in London.
However, it has been another disrupted season for Fofana, who has once again missed a considerable part of the season with injury. As a result, Chelsea are no longer opposed to offloading the centre-back that they signed for €80m back in 2022. The Premier League side would be receptive to loan offers or permanent transfer proposals, according to Foot Mercato.
The publication understands that Marseille retain their interest in the player, however, Sacha Tavolieri now reports that there are two key obstacles for a move, which mean that the deal has not advanced. The first is the player’s considerable salary at Chelsea, the second is Fofana’s current physical state, weakened by a succession of major injuries in recent seasons. The deal for OM would be financially difficult, despite the club’s qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
