Lyall Thomas lists VfL Wolfsburg and VfB Stuttgart as two potential Bundesliga suitors for Middlesbrough defender Rev van den Berg. The 21-year-old has also been linked with a switch to Premier League outfits Fulham and Brentford. A move to Germany may nevertheless appeal to the Dutch youth international based on the experience of his older brother Sepp.

Sepp spent two seasons on loan in the German top flight. An injury-riddled campaign with relegated Schalke 04 in the 2022/23 season did Sepp little good, but the former Liverpool man was able to establish himself on loan with Mainz the following year.

Sepp started 31 of Mainz’s 34 league fixtures in the 2023/24 Bundesliga campaign, going the full 90 minutes on all but one occasion. Three league goals during that season helped Sepp raise his estimated market value from €5m to €12m.

After returning from his Mainzer loan, Liverpool sold Sepp to Brentford for €23.6m. Sepp has since established himself in West London and further pumped up his market value to the figures in line with his Brentford sale.

A loan move to the Bundesliga might work for Rav as he would receive a chance to accrue more playing practice before heading to the English elite division and wouldn’t have to directly compete with his brother.

He remains under contract with his North Yorkshire club until 2027.
