Two members of the first-team ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona are considered the frontrunners to replace Marc-André ter Stegen in the club’s group of captains.
That’s according to El Desmarque, who have on Tuesday provided an insight into the situation.
The subject of the captaincy setup in Catalunya’s capital has of course returned to the forefront of the headlines across the day to date.
This comes after the official first captain in Hansi Flick’s squad – the aforementioned Ter Stegen – angered those in the Camp Nou boardroom once more.
As confirmed by a number of sources across the Spanish media, Ter Stegen has refused to sign off on Barcelona’s medical report regarding the extent of his current back injury.
Owing to this stance, the Blaugrana find themselves unable to make use of the German’s freed wages to register one of the club’s summer signings.
This has only added to what was an already tense relationship between club and player at present, one which is expected to culminate in Ter Stegen being stripped of his captain’s armband at any moment.
This will see a space in the group of captains in Flick’s ranks open up, alongside Frenkie de Jong, Ronald Araújo, Pedri and Raphinha.
And according to El Desmarque, two frontrunners have now emerged in the race to join this group:
‘The new addition could be Iñigo Martínez. Despite not being with Barça for long, the center-back is one of the most authoritative voices in the dressing room and could take on that role. He or Gavi would be the players to finalize the captaincy.’
