AC Milan are looking for a new central defender ahead of the summer transfer window, and Diego Coppola has emerged as the prime candidate.

This morning’s edition of Tuttosport writes that in addition to deciding the hierarchies for the back line at the end of this season, Milan are monitoring several emerging central defenders in view of next season.

The identikit has been set: the directors want a young player, possibly Italian by passport or with homegrown status at least, to help the squad list issue. These characteristics certainly fit very well with the name of Diego Coppola.

Fikayo Tomori’s future remains uncertain because the Englishman started well under Sergio Conceicao and then went back down the hierarchy. His value remains high, around €25m, and he is popular in the Premier League.

With that money, the Rossoneri can use the funds to sign an Italian defender and it is Coppola that is the name circled in red at present. A cornerstone of Paolo Zanetti’s defence, the young centre-back from Verona has so far made 27 appearances this season, 26 of which came in Serie A.

His excellent season is not going unnoticed and Milan’s scouts have started to seriously follow him also due to his versatility, characteristics that are currently missing in the Milan squad. His contract runs until 2027, so a summer move is far from ruled out.
