Real Madrid have set their sights on strengthening their midfield, and one of their top targets is Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi.

However, according to Sergio Lopez’s report in AS, their pursuit of the talented Spaniard is far from straightforward, as Arsenal are also making a strong push to sign him.

In fact, it is said that the Premier League side is willing to spend up to €60 million to secure his services, putting Madrid in a difficult position.

Rivals on and off the field

A particularly intriguing aspect of this transfer battle is that Arsenal, who will face Real Madrid in the Champions League, are also their biggest competitor in the race for Zubimendi.

While the Gunners are prepared to make a significant financial commitment, Madrid are hesitant to match such a high price.

Despite this, the club remains keen on the player, as they believe he possesses the quality needed to thrive at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Beyond his footballing ability, signing Zubimendi would also address another concern for Madrid—the lack of Spanish players in their squad.

At present, only four Spaniards—Dani Carvajal, Lucas Vazquez, Fran Garcia, and Dani Ceballos—feature regularly, with Jesus Vallejo barely considered in the first-team setup.

Madrid want to restore a stronger Spanish presence within their squad, and adding Zubimendi, along with the potential arrival of Dean Huijsen and the promotion of young talent Raul Asencio, would help achieve this goal.

Real Madrid aware of Arsenal’s interest

Real Madrid are fully aware of Arsenal’s growing interest in Zubimendi, which has become a significant concern.

The financial strength of Premier League clubs makes them tough competition in the transfer market, and Arsenal have shown a willingness to invest heavily in recent years to build a competitive squad.

The final decision now lies with Zubimendi. Madrid must convince him that a move to the Spanish capital is the best choice for his career.

If they fail to do so, they risk losing yet another top target to the financial might of the Premier League.
