As the transfer window rolls on and on, the deadline is now in sight. With under two weeks left until September 1st, the date it slams shut for most top European leagues, the market has never been more active for clubs desperately trying to get late deals over the line.
It can be easy, then, to miss some of the news, but fear not. Here are 10 of the biggest confirmed deals and transfer rumours of the last week.
It came as quite the bombshell when Fabrizio Romano reported that Savinho could be leaving Manchester City after only one season, with Tottenham Hotspur reported to be interested in acquiring his services. Those rumours only intensified when the Brazilian was left out of City’s opening game of the Premier League season away at Wolverhampton Wanderers thanks to an injury sustained against Palermo. That’s what Pep Guardiola said, at least. Oscar Bobb impressed in his absence, and City have been linked with a move to Real Madrid’s Rodrygo if Savinho is to leave the club. It’s thought they will only be considering offers in excess of £50 million, which would see them receive a tidy profit on the reported £30.8 million fee paid to Troyes last summer.
These are troubled times for Brentford, with the club having lost their manager (Thomas Frank) and top scorer from last season (Bryan Mbeumo) both in the same window. With the club having comfortably lost their opening game of the new Premier League campaign against Nottingham Forest and Yoane Wissa’s exit still rumoured, they finally have some good news in the form of a reported £42 million deal for Bournemouth’s Dango Outtara. The 23-year-old Burkina Faso international impressed with his versatility last season, primarily playing as either a left-winger or a centre-forward. However, with only nine goals in all competitions to his name over the course of the season, it remains to be seen whether Outtara will be able to fill Mbeumo’s shoes.
Finally, things are going well for The Magpies in the transfer market. After a slew of rejections and failed bids over the course of the summer, their acquisition of Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey, in a deal worth up to £43 million including potential add-ons, marks a real signal of intent for a side who impressed in their opening day draw at Villa Park. The boyhood Villan notched 11 goal contributions in 46 games last season, largely playing on the left flank. He adds further creative depth to a side who are now lacking only one thing: a striker. Ramsey has signed a five-year deal at his new club.
It caused a bit of a stir earlier in the week when an Instagram post from Jadon Sancho smashed the record for the most comments on a sportsperson’s post. Over five million comments all instructed him to do the same thing: come to Beşiktaş. So far, the winger is still yet to accept a move to any club, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that talks with Roma have ground to a halt while a move to the Turkish giants may only materialise later on, with their transfer window closing on September 12th. One thing is clear, though: it is highly unlikely Sancho will be a Manchester United player for much longer.
As the latest moving piece in Manchester City’s transfer shake-up, James McAtee has finally completed his long-rumoured move away from the club, joining Nottingham Forest after snubbing reported interest from clubs in Germany’s Bundesliga. The 22-year-old had been on City’s books since 2013 and he made 27 appearances last season, scoring seven goals in the process. For a worth up to £30 million (once more, including add-ons), McAtee has now moved to the City Ground alongside Omari Hutchinson and Arnaud Kalimuendo, who have all bolstered the club’s attacking options following the departure of Anthony Elanga earlier in the window.
Once a highly touted prospect at Juventus, Belgian centre half Koni De Winter really exploded into life over a two-season stint with Genoa. After making 57 appearances for the club, the 23-year-old has now made the move back to a top Italian side in the form of AC Milan. De Winter has signed for a fee of under £20 million and has signed a five-year-contract, with his new side looking to bounce back from an underwhelming eighth place finish in Serie A last season.
The significance of a potential Ederson departure from Manchester City wouldn’t just be limited to the end of an eight-year spell with the club, but it would also open the door for a rumoured move for PSG’s frozen-out Gianluigi Donnarumma. Romano has reported that Galatasaray are interested in the Brazilian’s services, while Manchester City are holding out for a deal worth over £10 million. If it goes through, it’s entirely possible that City will have three completely different keepers than last season, with James Trafford debuting against Wolves at the weekend, while Marcus Bettinelli was signed early in the summer to replace Scott Carson. The acquisition of Ederson would be quite the coup for a Galatasaray who lost long-time goalkeeper Fernando Muslera to Argentinian side Estudiantes back in June.
Things couldn’t be going much better for Sunderland right now. A surprise 3-0 win against West Ham to kick off their first topflight campaign on Saturday came on the back of an already impressive transfer window, with the likes of Granit Xhaka and Simon Adingra bolstering the squad which won the Championship play-offs last season. Now, The Black Cats have confirmed the singing of versatile PSG defender Nordi Mukiele for a fee of £12 million including add-ons. The 27-year-old spent last season on loan with Bayer Leverkusen, for whom he made 24 appearances. In total, he’s played 200 games across both the Bundesliga and Ligue 1, adding some more topflight experience to a Sunderland side who have a real chance of surviving in the Premier League.
Leeds United have finally acquired a new striking option in the form of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has traded Merseyside for West Yorkshire. The 28-year-old spent eight years at Everton, scoring 71 goals in a tenure increasingly disrupted by injuries. In 26 Premier League appearances last season, Calvert-Lewin scored three goals and made two assists, prompting new manager Daniel Farke to suggest this latest transfer is a chance for him to “revive his career.” The striker has signed a three-year deal at Elland Road and is the second signing in his position this summer following the arrival of Lukas Nmecha early in the window.
There is some romance left in football after all. According to L’Equipe, Eric Bailly has all but secured a return to LaLiga with newbies Real Oviedo after leaving Villarreal at the expiration of his contract in July. This comes after he reportedly turned down a move to Saudi Arabian outfit Al Najmah SC, with the Ivorian international favouring a move to the Spanish topflight. Real Oviedo returned to LaLiga via last season’s play-offs, and this will be their first season there since 2001. In that time, they’ve dropped as low as the fourth tier and overcome huge financial challenges: now, they’re about to have a former Manchester United defender in their ranks.
