Tottenham Hotspur are considering signing Mathys Tel on a permanent transfer this summer but will not pay Bayern Munich the active £45m buy clause negotiated during the winter transfer window, a report has claimed.

Having been starved of opportunities since Vincent Kompany's arrival at Bayern last summer, Tel sought an exit during the midpoint of the current campaign in search of more first-team football. The 19-year-old eventually secured a loan move to Tottenham despite initially refusing the switch and has since scored twice in ten appearances for the north London club.

The forward's current deal with Spurs includes an option for the Lilywhites to sign him permanently this summer but a relatively mediocre start to life in English football has brought questions over whether they would activate the buy clause in his deal.

But, according to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenburg, Spurs are "happy" with Tel and are "considering a permanent move" - although they're yet to finalise that decision. One conclusion Tottenham have come to, however, is that they will renegotiate the current £45m fee with Bayern should they decide to sign the France youth international.

The report reveals that "Tel has no future at Bayern under the current leadership" and that the Bavarians are eager to make a permanent sale this summer. Despite having shown glimpses of his immense promise in Germany since a move from Rennes in 2022, Kompany is not enamoured by the talented and versatile forward, whose departure could go a long way to helping fund a move for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz.

Tottenham have a sizeable summer of transfer business ahead and could even have a new manager in the dugout by the time next season commences. Ange Postecoglou remains under enormous pressure in the capital and could be replaced should Spurs fail to end their 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League this term.

Attacking reinforcements are expected as Spurs look to put an immensely underwhelming campaign behind them but signing Tel permanently would see a large chunk of their transfer budget disappear.

If Bayern refuse to budge from their asking price, Tel could once again emerge on the radars of other sides in England. Both Chelsea and Manchester United chased his signature in January, but whether either would reignite their interest remains to be seen.
