Torino are ready to rival Inter Milan to try and sign Spezia defender Nicolo Bertola on a free transfer next summer.
This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews. They report that Bertola has already rejected three contract extension offers from Spezia, but that there’s competition for his signature.
At the moment, Spezia are second in the Serie B table.
After struggling to find their feet back in the second division last season, the Ligurians look potentially ready to push for promotion back to Serie A this time around.
It is still early, but Spezia have certainly been one of Serie B’s form teams.
And at the heart of that early success has been a strong defensive record.
Spezia have conceded seven goals in the first eight matches of the season. That is the joint fewest in Serie B at this stage of the campaign, along with Palermo.
And a key figure in this strong defensive record has been young defender Bertola. He has been a regular on the left of the back three under coach Luca D’Angelo.
Bertola is currently under contract with Spezia until the end of next June.
The young defender signed his most recent extension with the Ligurian club in 2022.
And Spezia have been trying to change that. They have made several offers of a new deal for Bertola to avoid losing him on a free transfer in a few months.
But according to Tuttosport, Bertola has rejected them. He has turned down three offers so far.
Therefore, it is looking more and more likely that Bertola will be a free transfer opportunity next summer.
And Inter are right there with an interest in signing the 21-year-old.
However, it is not just the Nerazzurri pushing to sign Bertola.
Tuttosport report that Torino have also already made contact with Spezia about the young defender. They would consider him to be a big opportunity.
