The Athletic’s Liam Twomey has shared details on why Chelsea have decided to sign Renato Veiga from Swiss club FC Basel.

In surprise news it was announced on Friday that Chelsea had agreed a deal worth €14m for the 20-year-old who is set to undergo his medical and sign a contract until 2032.

If all goes to plan Veiga will become Chelsea’s sixth summer signing after Tosin Adarabioyo, Estevao Willian who will join in 2025, Omari Kellyman, Marc Guiu and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Chelsea’s plan for Veiga

Chelsea’s move for Veiga came out of the Blue given there had been no links to the Portuguese in the media, and the Blues appear to have acted in silence on this deal.

It had been reported that the club were looking to sign a left footed defender and it appears they are now set to land their man.

The Blues had been linked with a move for Bologna’s Riccardo Calafiori but never actually made an offer, with the Italy international looking like he will join Arsenal.

Chelsea view Veiga as excellent value for money.

Veiga actually joined Basel from Sporting Lisbon last summer as a replacement for Calafiori and made 26 appearances in all competitions last season for the Swiss side.

Attention now turns to what Chelsea’s plans are for Veiga and where he fits in amongst the current squad given they are well stocked defensively.

Twomey has reported in The Athletic that Chelsea like the fact Veiga can play at left back, centre back and in midfield.

He adds that Veiga fits a specific style Maresca is looking for to help implement his style of play, and addresses a lack of height in the squad which has been identified by some.

Twomey states that Veiga will be assessed by Maresca in pre-season and that Chelsea consider him to be excellent value for money given he’s taller than Calafiori and has a better injury historry.

Only time will tell how well Veiga does, but the signing certainly brings more questions over Ben Chilwell’s future given he seemingly doesn’t suit how Maresca wants to play.
