Sandro Tonali admitted that his goal of the season contender for Newcastle in their 2-1 Premier League victory over Brentford on Wednesday night was ‘70% a cross, 30% a shot’, and that it was ‘difficult for the goalkeeper, but also difficult for me’.
The Italy international had fans and pundits questioning whether he truly meant to find the roof of the net from such a tight angle during Newcastle’s victory at home against Brentford.

The former Milan midfielder struck the ball with plenty of power, but from his tight angle close to the byline, surely there was no way he actually meant to shoot?
“Honestly, 70% shot, but 30% shot, but it was too strong, too powerful, was difficult for the ‘keeper, but was also difficult for me,” Tonali jokes during his post-match interview with Sky Sports.

Wednesday night was not the first time that Tonali had ‘accidentally’ found the net.
While at Brescia back in 2019, he did similar from the other side of the pitch, sending a free-kick that looked like a cross slightly too high for his teammates, but into the top corner of the net instead.
