Fikayo Tomori weighed a return to the Premier League or a transfer to Juventus due to his lack of minutes, but he has decided to stay put and play his cards under new Milan coach Sergio Conceiçao. The Rossoneri and the Old Lady would have ramped up the talks after Friday’s Supercoppa semifinal, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.
The defender will re-assess the situation at the end of the month. He could change his mind if Matteo Gabbia and Malick Thiaw continue to form the standard pairing in the back. In the meantime, the bond with the other staples of the squad convinced him not to jump ship in trying times.
Tomori relayed his choice to the Milan brass, which won’t proceed in the negotiation with Juventus. It was ongoing but it wasn’t on its homestretch. After the Pierre Kalulu deal last summer, the Rossoneri would have sent another center-back to the competition only on a €25M permanent move or a loan with an obligation to buy. They had shortlisted Valencia’s Cristhian Mosquera and Benfica’s Antonio Silva as possible replacements.
The Chelsea youth product, in addition to his seesawing displays and the solidity of his teammates, also paid the price for the incident in Florence. He contributed to denying designated PK taker Christian Pulisic by handing the ball to Tammy Abraham, who missed.
Nothing is ever etched in stone in the transfer market, and Thiago Motta needed to persuade Kalulu to join last summer, but timing is crucial. The Old Lady will be disappointed if they were hoping to head back from Saudi Arabia having addressed their biggest need already.
