Both Luciano Spalletti and FIGC President Gabriele Gravina face uncertain futures following Italy’s exit from EURO 2024 at the round of 16 stage on Saturday evening.

The Azzurri were dumped out of the competition in their first knockout game, succumbing to a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland at Berlin’s Olympiastadion.

Both the CT and the chief of the governing body have come under fire in the aftermath of Italy’s EURO disappointment, with some Azzurri supporters calling for their heads in response to Saturday’s defeat.

Both are still under contract, however, and are under no obligation to leave. That said, neither have yet confirmed their intentions moving forwards.

Three options for Spalletti and Gravina

Corriere dello Sport suggests that there are three possible scenarios surrounding Spalletti and Gravina’s futures.

Either they both resign immediately, neither of them resign, or Gravina resigns and Spalletti stays on.

The Italian outlet hints that the first scenario is unlikely at this point in time given the timings and the fact that Italy have to play France in the Nations League on September 6, leaving little time to search for replacements.

In the second scenario, Gravina’s long-term future in his role is still not guaranteed, as there will be elections held in March 2025.

The third scenario would not necessarily be particularly ideal, as Spalletti would then find himself working under a President who did not appoint him and could therefore aso decide to look in a different direction in the near future.
