While Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro is on the cusp of officially leaving Lazio, he might not be the last to depart in January.
The 32-year-old will soon be announced as a new Monza player, as he returns to the U-Power for another stint after spending the previous campaign on loan with the Biancorossi. This move has been confirmed by a host of Italian sources, including Gianluca Di Marzio. The Ivorian will spend the remaining six months of his Lazio contract in Brianza, so he’ll be a free agent in the summer.
But according to La Lazio Siamo Noi, three Biancocelesti could follow Akpa Akpro to the door, beginning with fellow midfield outcast Toma Basic. The 28-year-old never truly managed to meet the expectations following his transfer from Bordeaux in 2021.
The Croatian spent the second part of the previous campaign at Salernitana, and while he has been reduced to an almost forgotten figure among Lazio fans, his €1.4 million-per-year salary has been haunting the management who failed to offload him in the summer. The source claims that Hellas Verona and Empoli could emerge as possible solutions, while there could be solutions in Turkey, France and Spain.
The report then moves to Elseid Hysaj who also found himself outside Marco Baroni’s Serie A and Europa League squads. While the Albanian showed he hasn’t missed a step in his brilliant Coppa Italia outing against Napoli, his €2.5M salary represents a major hurdle for any potential suitor. Nevertheless, the source claims the full-back could be reintegrated into the squad if Gaetano Castovilli leaves and is replaced by a young player (eligible for the U-22 list).
Speaking of the former Fiorentina man, he isn’t necessarily seeking an exit, but his departure isn’t completely ruled out given his underwhelming start to life at Formello, which has been impeded by physical problems. The source notes that Udinese have made timid inspections of the player’s availability while Genoa and Torino could also be interested.
Nevertheless, Castrovilli would become a much more enticing prospect for his suitors if he were to terminate his Lazio contract (expiring at the end of the season). The report expects an important meeting to take place between the player’s entourage and the Lazio hierarchy in the coming days.
