Manchester United were comfortably beaten by arch-rivals Liverpool this weekend, leaving Erik ten Hag under pressure at Old Trafford.

The embarrassing defeat has set the rumour mill off-and-running as to who might replace the Dutchman if INEOS decide to pull the trigger.

The Mirror report United have decided who is ‘next in line’ for the job should performances and results not significantly improve.

Former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel appears to be the first choice for the new minority owners and back-to-back defeats for Ten Hag have heightened the chances of a change in the dugout.

Tuchel was spoken to by United chiefs in the summer but INEOS decide to stick with Ten Hag after his FA Cup success.

The German is currently without a club after losing his position at Bayern last season.

Bayer Leverkusen romped to the Bundesliga title and Bayern were left with rare trophyless campaign, which was a huge disappointment to Tuchel, who previously won the Champions League with Chelsea.

No doubt the 51-year-old has pedigree and would instil a style of play that would make United much harder to beat than they currently are.

The early signs from this season are that Ten Hag is still struggling to strike the right balance with a squad that does boast some excellent players on their day.

However, these days are becoming all too rare and the mood at Old Trafford wasn’t a good one at the full-time whistle on Sunday.

Bayern aside, Tuchel’s resume is impressive and he is undoubtedly the highest profile coach available on the market at present.

Recently appointed CEO Omar Berrada has given his “full backing” to Ten Hag and says the club will “continue to work very closely with him to help him get the best results out of the team,” in a recent interview.

However, should United continue their sloppy start to the season, things might dramatically change at the Theatre of Dreams, particularly with Tuchel seemingly waiting in the wings.
