‘This is why I stayed here’ – Heung-min Son reflects on winning his first trophy with Tottenham | OneFootball

Heung-min Son says winning the Europa League with Tottenham validates his decision to stay at the club for ten years.

The Spurs skipper lifted his first trophy with the club during that time after his side beat Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao.

And Son says he has achieved one of the main goals of his career in doing so.

“I stayed here around 10 years because I want to win the trophy, because nobody has done it (for a while),” he said.

“So maybe it’s the hardest way, maybe it’s the wrong way. I don’t care, because I want to do these things.

“I’m the type who always wants to have challenges. And today, I think, before the season started, nobody believed we’re going to win the Europa League, but we did it. And as captain of club I’m so proud of this team and proud of the players and and we deserve it.

“I believed it from day one, that we can win the Europa League, and today’s the day that happens. I’m more than happy. The luckiest guy, happiest guy in the world.”

Spurs have come in for plenty of criticism this year due to their disappointing Premier League campaign which sees them sit 17th in the table at present.

But Son echoed his manager Ange Postecoglou, insisting that winning a trophy is much more important than finishing higher up the Premier League table.

“They will always criticise us,” he said. “But look, I mean, I say yesterday in the press conference again, this will be the first trophy after 17 years.

“We hope we can change the mentality of the club, and mentality of the fan base, and we can continue to to work, and we can continue to challenge for another trophy, and I hope that will happen, that change, change the whole environment.”
