Paris Saint-Germain advanced to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals with a 4-1 win in a penalty shootout after drawing 1-1 on aggregate with Liverpool Tuesday night at Anfield.
The match saw PSG take the lead in the 12th minute when Nuno Mendes passed the ball to Ousmane Dembele in the center. Dembele quickly fed it to Bradley Barcola on the right, whose return pass was deflected by Ibrahima Konate’s sliding tackle, unintentionally setting up Dembele for an easy finish.
Neither team scored in extra time, sending the game to penalties. PSG converted all four of their attempts against Alisson Becker, while Gianluigi Donnarumma stood firm in goal for the visitors.
After conceding a penalty to Mohamed Salah, Donnarumma made crucial saves against Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones. The shootout ended when Desire Doue calmly slotted in the final penalty, securing PSG’s place in the next round.

Dembele scored and converted his penalty kick to help PSG reach the quarterfinals. While the Frenchman is on a streak that rivals Cristiano Ronaldo’s, Thierry Henry doesn’t see the PSG attacker as the favorite for the Ballon d’Or.
“Raphinha is ahead for me now [in the race for the Ballon d’Or], he is ahead because of what he is doing in the Champions League. He has 11 goals in the Champions League,” Henry said (h/t TEAMtalk).
“Mo Salah is a great contender for it, [Harry] Kane is a contender and [Ousmane] Dembele. It depends if you perform in the Champions League, on top of winning your league. Raphinha is on a lot of goals and with only one penalty.”
