AC Milan were able to beat Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday, but the performance was not a good one by any stretch. In fact, it was quite the opposite.
With the loss against Atalanta last week, Milan needed to show a massive improvement in the Champions League, and they did anything but that. The Rossoneri left it late against the visitors and did not look like a team fighting for a place among the top 8 – far from it.
Of course, this is not a new thing with this team, and it is not the first time that we have left games feeling underwhelmed against a lesser opponent. For example, against Slovan Bratislava, three points were collected, but the Diavolo did not make things easy.
As a result of the performance, Paulo Fonseca spoke openly about his frustrations concerning the team – the second game running where he spoke probably too honestly to the press – and he is not the only one to feel how he does.
Speaking to Sky after the game, Malick Thiaw admitted that Milan are a difficult team to describe currently and his words have been relayed by Milan News.
“I agree with Fonseca. It was a difficult game and we didn’t do what we wanted to do: it was difficult to play with the ball and without the ball. We played without aggressiveness, leaving two-three opportunities for them.
“It’s difficult, because, as the coach said, one day we do well, the second day… pfff… I don’t know.”
