‘They can sign better’ – Barcelona legend endorses Frenkie de Jong sale | OneFootball

A once-iconic member of the attacking ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona has today provided his take on the situation of Frenkie de Jong at the club.

The name of midfielder De Jong has of course maintained its place front and centre in the headlines in Catalunya’s capital heading into the summer.

As much comes amid long-standing claims that, owing to the ongoing financial problems at Barcelona, the Dutch international could be sacrificed with a view to next season.

Though De Jong remains a pivotal member of boss Xavi’s engine room ranks, he is considered one of the more attractive sale options, due to the widespread interest in his signature and, in turn, significant transfer value.

With the former Ajax man’s contract due to expire in the summer of 2026, and little progress having been made in negotiations towards a renewal, the coming summer is therefore considered by many to represent the right moment to seek out a parting of ways.

And one individual who certainly appears to be of the opinion that Barcelona would benefit from De Jong’s sale comes in the form of Blaugrana legend Rivaldo.

Speaking as part of his role as ambassador for Betfair, as cited by Diario Sport, ex-Brazilian international Rivaldo revealed his take that the board at the Camp Nou should be able to source a superior player to take over De Jong’s spot in Xavi’s midfield:

“Although he is now in his fifth season at the club, his situation is based on the same scenario: the club needs to move and add players. In his case, surely Barça can sign players of the same level or even better than him.”
