Disaster struck for AC Milan last night as they were eliminated from the Champions League in the play-off round by Feyenoord at San Siro.

With a 1-0 first leg deficit to overcome, things could hardly have started better for Milan as Santiago Gimenez equalised after just 36 seconds, scoring against his former club.

However, Theo Hernandez’s red card early in the second half totally changed the game and allowed Feyenoord to grow in belief. Julian Carranza came off the bench to equalise on the night and send the Dutch side through with a 2-1 aggregate win.

Players ratings from the newspapers

La Gazzetta dello Sport have their ratings from the game in this morning’s edition, starting with the team’s overall performance which was given a 5.5 out of 10 and Sergio Conceicao’s management which got a 5.

The only player to receive a positive score was Strahinja Pavlovic who again showed the heart and determination required, getting a 6.5, while Theo Hernandez got a 3 for his red card.

Davide Bartesaghi was adjudged to have been at fault for Feyenoord’s goal having come off the bench to replace Theo, so he got a 5. Kyle Walker, Yunus Musah, Joao Felix, Rafael Leao and Youssouf Fofana got half a mark more.

Mike Maignan, Malick Thiaw, Tijjani Reijnders, Christian Pulisic and Santiago Gimenez each received a passing grade of 6, with nobody getting above that.

Corriere dello Sport gave Conceicao a 5.5, while they agreed that Theo was deserving of a 3. They blame Pavlovic for the Dutch side’s goal (5), with Felix getting the same score.

Leao and Bartesaghi were given a 5.5, while praise was given to Pulisic (6.5) for his impact as well as the goal scorer Gimenez (7) and centre-back Malick Thiaw (6.5).
