Mainz defender Dominik Kohr has hit out at referee Sascha Stegemann following Wednesday's 0-4 DFB-Pokal defeat to Bayern Munich.
He admitted that Bayern were "a class above" Mainz, but felt they were helped by refereeing decisions that went their way.
At this stage of the tournament, there's no opportunity to review situations using VAR technology, and Kohr didn't think Stegemann and his team did a good job of getting the calls right.
"The 2-0 goal was offside, and I was run over a bit for the fourth. That was when I realized the referee was wearing a Bayern shirt," Kohr fumed in an interview with Sky Germany.
Kohr used the term "Bayern bonus" to describe how he felt that "every little decision" went in the Bavarians' favor.
But he also showed some self-criticism, saying:
“We have to ask ourselves why we conceded the goals.”
Like Kohr, Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner questioned the refereeing after the game. On Musiala's second goal, he said:
“You don't need VAR for that. It's relatively clear, the situation is easy to judge. It wasn't even close.”
