Rasmus Højlund (21) joined Manchester United in the summer from Atalanta for £64 million. A fee the club were more than willing to pay for a player they believed would soon grow into his price tag. Højlund has long been considered an exciting prospect. His physicality and technique making him a prize asset for a team that was looking to rebuild their forward line.

And for Højlund the decision to join the former Premier League champions was an easy one. He had grown up watching Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo (39) and this was a chance to follow in their footsteps, and perhaps even to bring back the glory years when those two United legends shared the pitch.

Rasmus Højlund wanted to be like his role model at Manchester United

As the Danish forward explained in an exclusive interview with France Football, “Why Man United? There are several little things… It was the club that won everything when I was little. And there was Ronaldo and Rooney. They have always inspired me. Finally, I always found the logo cool… the red and the devil caught my eye.”

It was particularly the idea of being like Ronaldo that attracted Højlund to the club, “He won everything here, like the Ballon d’Or in 2008. Powerful, technically gifted, he could score, pass…In short, do everything. It was obvious, I wanted to become like him, to win titles.”
