The four first team Newcastle United signings that should be targeted this summer

Once this Premier League season is over, whatever happens these final two matches, wherever in the table Eddie Howe and his team finish, the big topic for fans will be the Newcastle United signings that will arrive this summer.

Which players the supporters would like to see come to St James’ Park.

Which potential Newcastle United signings they think the club will be in for.

Then realistically, who’s available and whether they could be attracted to the Newcastle United project.

As usual, a lot of speculation as to what the United hierarchy would be willing and able to spend this summer, claims that up to around £150m could be possible.

Even if that £150m figure of spending capability is true, I don’t expect to see the whole budget blown in one transfer window, only to then see a repeat of frugal spending down the line. I see a measured approach.

I also think Newcastle will spend the bigger money on younger players, rather than say on the heavily speculated Bryan Mbeumo as an example.

In my opinion he’d a terrific signing . A great all round forward who’s consistently delivered the past few seasons. I don’t see the club though spending £60m+ and a handsome wage on a player who will turn 26 before next season and who is approaching his prime.

Mbeumo is someone who would cost the club around £90m/£100m in the long run and wouldn’t offer much in terms of resale value if Newcastle United were to decide to sell him down the line. I have no doubts he’d repay his fee in terms of goals and the part he’d play in our next phase, however, I don’t see the club going for him. I see the club looking at good players but who are maybe around 23 or 24 rather than 26 or 27.

People may point at Harvey Barnes to say the club aren’t adverse to signing someone who’s more at their prime to speak, but we got Harvey Barnes (who was aged 25 in summer 2023) for around £37m due to Leicester City’s relegation. Had they not gone down, then I think there’s every chance Harvey Barnes would have stayed put, or he’d have cost closer to £60m.

I just don’t see the club parting with £60m or so on a player who will be over 30 by the time their contract is due to expire. I don’t think we are in the position to drop such a large sum on a player and not worry about replacing him in a couple of seasons. We aren’t there yet in that respect.

So I think it will be younger players with a mix of some Premier League experience and some on the continent.

I think we may see four first team Newcastle United signings.

Goalkeeper, central defender, a winger who can play down the middle as a striker, plus the other maybe a midfielder if Sean Longstaff, as strongly rumoured, does end up departing.

If no sales in midfield, then I see another piece of recruitment in the defensive areas of the team.

Who will these Newcastle United signings be?

Only time will tell of course but I don’t think it’ll be the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Marc Guehi, or other Premier League players NUFC have been credited with an interest in, who are in that sort of age and wage bracket.

If I was picking my big four Newcastle United signings…

I’d actually go for Brentford’s (24 year old) Nathan Collins and (21 year old) Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace, in the defence and midfield department.

Goalkeeper? I’d look on the continent and go for a 23 year old Frenchman, currently at Lille, in the name of Lucas Chevalier.

The forward I’d go for? That would be Borussia Dortmund’s 23 year old Karim Adeyemi.

These are all very good players at a good age, who I’d deem to be readymade, plus also having room to develop further.

Who knows how much my preferred Newcastle United signings would cost, but I do believe though that this is the kind of age group and quality we will be targeting this summer.
