Manuel Akanji has joined Inter Milan on loan for the 25/26 season. The versatile defender leaves Manchester City after spending three seasons at the club. During his time at the club, Akanji has been an important contributor to his team’s success. He played a critical role in Manchester City’s treble success during the 22/23 season and has always been willing to play any role asked of him by Pep Guardiola to help his team.

Manuel Akanji had proven to be a shrewd signing by Manchester City.

Manuel Akanji signed for Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund for £15 million during the summer of 2022. Akanji made 136 appearances for the club and played an integral role in Manchester City’s success. He helped his team win two Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League, one FA Cup, one FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup during his time at the club. But more important than all of the trophies is the role Akanji has played for Pep Guardiola’s side.

During the 22/23 season, Akanji helped form the strong defensive foundation for Manchester City to win the treble. Playing Akanji alongside Ruben Dias, John Stones, and Nathan Ake gave Pep Guardiola’s side a strong defensive foundation to work from. Akanji played a vital role for City in that famous season. It was Akanji’s ball to Bernardo Silva that broke open Inter Milan’s defence to set up Rodri’s winner in the 2023 UEFA Champions League final. That pass alone from Akanji repaid his transfer fee. But Akanji’s efforts outside of that season make him a shrewd signing for Manchester City.

Manuel Akanji could play in any position across the back four. He showed that trait throughout the past two seasons at Manchester City. During the 23/24 season, the Swiss international was an important player as Pep Guardiola’s side claimed a fourth consecutive Premier League title. Last season, Akanji played through injury to help his team. Ultimately, Akanji’s body broke down, but his efforts should be lauded as he was always there for his team as they battled an injury crisis last season.

In terms of value for money in a transfer, Manuel Akanji sits at the top of that particular table. He came to Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund with little fanfare. But he leaves the club for Inter Milan as an important player in Manchester City’s recent success. That is a credit to Akanji and his versatility and he has been an integral component of Manchester City’s recent success.
