Former Norwich City coach Jack Wilshere sent a message to Borja Sainz after he completed a transfer to FC Porto.
Former Norwich City coach Jack Wilshere has wished Borja Sainz well after he secured a big-money move to FC Porto.
The 24-year-old attacker joined the Canaries in the summer of 2023 from Turkish outfit Giresunspor, and he enjoyed a decent first campaign in English football, scoring six goals in the Championship.
However, Sainz went up a level last season, as he found the net 18 times, as well as registering four assists, which made him one of the most productive players in the league.
Therefore, keeping the Spaniard at Carrow Road was always going to be difficult after Norwich failed to reach the play-offs, and that has proven to be the case.
After plenty of speculation, it was confirmed that Porto had won the race to sign the winger, with the Portuguese giants paying over £14m to land Sainz.
Whilst that represents a substantial profit for the Yellows, they will miss his goals, with Liam Manning sure to be pushing to use those funds to help add to the squad.
Even though Norwich had a disappointing season under Johannes Hoff Thorup, the Dane and his coaching staff deserve credit for the way they improved Sainz during his time in charge.
Jack Wilshere was part of that setup, with the ex-Arsenal favourite also taking charge of the team for the final few games after Thorup had been dismissed.
So, Wilshere has a relationship with Sainz, and he took to Instagram to send a message to the player, as he simply stated; ‘Good luck mate. What a player’.
Sainz had reflected on his departure with an emotional message to the Norwich fans after spending two years in Norfolk.
This is a nice touch from Wilshere, as he will have got to know Sainz, and the other Norwich players, on a day-to-day basis during his time as a coach.
Whilst he is no longer part of the coaching team at Carrow Road, he will still be in contact with some players, and he will be glad to see Sainz making what has to be seen as a big step up in his career.
Thorup, Wilshere and the rest of the coaching staff have played a part in that, so they should be proud of that role.
Now, though, the only focus for Norwich is working out how they replace such an influential figure. The signing of Mathias Kvistgaarden is a real coup, but more work is needed, and it could be a very busy period for the club.
