Swansea City are interested in signing former Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah
Swansea City are among a group of Championship clubs who have been offered the chance to sign former Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
That's according to Wales Online, who report that the 27-year-old has been a free agent since leaving reigning Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen last summer, but has spent the last couple of weeks training with Dutch giants Ajax, in an effort to maintain his fitness.
Meanwhile, ahead of Tuesday night's clash with league leaders Sheffield United, the Swans sit 13th in the Championship table, eight points above the relegation zone, and seven points below the play-offs.
Wales Online sources based in the Netherlands have revealed that the Dutch international has been offered to a number of second tier clubs, including Middlesbrough, Queens Park Rangers, Stoke City and Blackburn Rovers, who have all opted against signing the former Red Devils man amid concerns surrounding his fitness.
The report adds that there is still a chance Fosu-Mensah earns himself a contract with Ajax, should he impress manager Francesco Farioli in training, but he would be keen on a move to the Championship.
Meanwhile, Swans boss Luke Williams was due to visit the Netherlands last weekend to look at a potential centre-back option, but Wales Online believe he cancelled that trip, due to the defender in question not playing for a club.
Acquiring the services of a new central defender remains the main priority for the Swans during the current transfer window, while, as per BBC Sport, the Welsh outfit were unable to agree a fee with League One Wycombe Wanderers amid their efforts to sign Joe Low.
Fosu-Mensah came through the youth academy ranks at Ajax, before moving to Man United in 2014 and made his senior debut for the club during the 2015/16 season, in which he made eight Premier League appearances.
The Dutchman went on to make 11 outings across all competitions for the Red Devils throughout the 2016/17 campaign, including four Europa League appearances.
He would then endure loan spells with both Crystal Palace and Fulham during the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons respectively, before making a further nine Red Devils outings ahead of a permanent move to Leverkusen in January 2021.
However, his time with the current champions of Germany was plagued by injuries, and he made a total of just 30 appearances for them before leaving just last summer.
During his tenure with Leverkusen, Fosu-Mensah experienced a series of injuries, including issues with both his knee and hamstring, as well as experiencing a cruciate ligament tear.
While Xabi Alonso's men enjoyed a historic season, in which they went unbeaten during an entire domestic campaign, and won the Bundesliga and Pokal double, the former Man United defender was unable to make a single appearance.
Fosu-Mensah's free agent status, of course, means the Swans will not have to splash out a transfer fee in order to sign him, but acquiring the services of a player who has not made an appearance since the 2022/23 campaign is a definite risk.
