Friday night’s Bundesliga fixture proved quite the rollercoaster ride for German national team midfielder Angelo Stiller. The VfB Stuttgart man initially put his side ahead with a brilliant goal against his former academy side Bayern Munich. Unfortunately for the 23-year-old, Leon Goretzka was later able to strip the ball off of him and score what would prove the match-winning goal in Bayern’s victory.

Stiller found himself eating crow when speaking to Sky Germany in the mixed zone. Stiller trained with FCB for 11 years before following current Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeneß to Hoffenheim and eventually his current club. The former Säbener Straße protégée looked back at his 34th minute goal celebration in from of the Bayern FanKurve with regret.

I’d like to apologise to the Bayern fans for celebrating,” Stiller noted. “It wasn’t right or respectful. I was full of euphoria and didn’t think about it.

Stiller’s VfB teammate Alexander Nübel was left to explain the crucial scene in the 64th when a high pressing Leon Goretzka poached a risky pass out of the back off Nübel’s boot. Nübel effectively took responsibility, though he did note that he expected Stiller to play the ball back to him instead of attempting to forward to defender Jeff Chabot.

Leon pressed very well in this situation,” Nübel said, “He usually plays the ball straight back to me when he’s under pressure. [Still] the pass was too risky.”

I spoke to him [Leon] briefly.” Stiller added. “He said that he had been speculating on such a ball all night. He does it well. It Looks stupid. A silly mistake.
