Giovanni Stroppa confirms it was Cremonese’s decision to fire him, despite earning promotion to Serie A. ‘We coaches always depend on being chosen.’

Sassuolo and Pisa gained automatic promotion by taking the top two spots in the Serie B table, while the Grigiorossi had to wait until winning the play-offs on June 1 to book their place in the top flight.

Despite those results, Cremonese announced that Stroppa will not have his contract renewed when it comes to an end on June 30.

“It is part of the end of an extraordinary experience together,” Stroppa told Sky Sport Italia.

“I would not focus on the reasons for this separation, but rather concentrate on a result we achieved with all our strength.

“We coaches always depend on being chosen, so the decision is ultimately not ours.”

There are reports Stroppa will be hired by Venezia, who were recently relegated to Serie B.

“I don’t know, in all honesty that is one of the options I am considering. We’ll see if it happens or not.”

It has been an odd journey for the 57-year-old, who had originally taken the job in September 2023, was fired on October 8 2024, replaced by Eugenio Corini for five games, then rehired a month later.

This is also not entirely a new experience for Stroppa, who took Crotone and Monza to promotion, only to be fired a few weeks into the new Serie A season.

It means that of the three teams promoted to Serie A this summer, two are looking for new coaches, as Pisa parted company with Pippo Inzaghi.
