In League One, there was a huge game on Saturday afternoon, as Spurs loanees Josh Keeley, Jamie Donley, and their Leyton Orient side hosted nearby Charlton Athletic.
Coming into the game, the O’s were in sixth place — the final play off spot — with 53 points from their 33 games, and a goal difference of plus seventeen. Meanwhile, their visitors were in seventh place, with 53 points from 32 games, and a goal difference of plus thirteen.
After an entertaining first half, where both sides had good chances, with Keeley making four saves, the two sides were still deadlocked. Five minutes after the break, Orient took the lead through a long range strike.
With four minutes of normal time remaining, Donley was replaced — as Richie Wellens’ side remained 1-0 up, and heading for an absolutely huge three points in this six pointer.
However, disaster soon struck. Two minutes into stoppage time — Charlton equalised. Then, as Orient pushed forward in an attempt to retake the lead, the away side inexplicably managed to score a second and take all three points in dramatic fashion.
Worst of all, not only was Keeley so close to a win and a clean sheet — but he made an error for both goals. It has been a brilliant season for the young goalkeeper, with penalty shootout heroics, scoring a goal, impressing vs Manchester City on national television and everything else — this was undoubtedly the lowest point of his loan spell so far.
Let’s hope it hasn’t damaged his confidence because again, it has been a really productive loan spell so far, and there is still plenty to play for as a collective, despite a really tough defeat to take in this game.
With the gut wrenching loss, Orient now sit in eighth place in League One, with 53 points from their 34 games — three points below Charlton, whilst having played one game more.
So, had they managed to hold on for the three points, they would have remained in the play-off positions, with a two point lead over Bolton Wanderers, combined with superior goal difference, whilst also being just two points below Huddersfield Town in fifth place.
Next up is an away game up in South Yorkshire, as they face Rotherham United tomorrow evening in League One, for a 19:45 GMT kick off.
