Barcelona are preparing to make a grand return to the iconic Spotify Camp Nou, with the Joan Gamper Trophy set to be played in front of a much larger crowd than initially expected.

According to a report by SPORT, the club is aiming to host up to 60,000 spectators for the match against Como on August 10, marking the first official game back at the historic ground since renovations began.

From 25,000 to 60,000: An ambitious leap

Initially, the club had planned for a test event with around 35,000 fans in attendance to assess the condition of the pitch, crowd movement, and the stadium’s new features.

Club president Joan Laporta had described the Gamper Trophy as the perfect opportunity to test the new setup before La Liga kicks off. However, recent updates suggest that the number of spectators could be more than doubled.

Thanks to the rapid progress made by construction company Limak, both the first and second tiers of the stadium are expected to be ready by matchday.

These levels can accommodate up to 60,000 fans, while work on the third tier will continue during non-matchdays. If all goes as planned, this could be a spectacular soft opening for the renovated stadium.

Final checks and permit approval underway

Barcelona are leaving no stone unturned to ensure the event runs smoothly. Before the August 10 fixture, the club plans to conduct a full-scale load test.

Although timelines are tight, the club remains confident that all necessary permits will be secured in time.

While August 10 will mark the symbolic return, the full reopening of Spotify Camp Nou is planned for September, following the international break.

That month is also significant because UEFA mandates that group stage Champions League matches must be played in the same venue throughout.

Hence, Barcelona are focused on ensuring the stadium is ready for the return of Europe’s biggest club competition.
