We weren’t fans of the move that saw Renato Veiga loaned out to Juventus in January.
Chelsea had only just bought him in the summer as their backup left back. So now we don’t have a backup left back. If we think we don’t need a backup left back, why did we buy a backup left back in the first place?
In any case, the move weakens our first team squad with the naked intention of making money. We signed him for cheap, now we have the chance to loan him out and improve his value by letting him play for a top team. Then we can sell him on for a juicy profit.
Oh look, we really have become Brighton/Dortmund – just a version that loses money (at least, so far).

In any case, regardless of what we think of the strategy, the move has happened now, and all we can do now is hope that the Portugal international does well and does indeed bring in a big fee this summer (perhaps we could use it to sign a backup left back?).
So far so good on that front, anyway. Veiga has gone straight into Juve’s starting XI, and has played in Serie A already, making his Champions League bow for the Old Lady last night.
Their sporting director Cristiano Guintoli has been speaking about the defender already:
We are very happy with Renato Veiga’s impact, same for [former Newcastle defender Lloyd] Kelly. We needed two defenders”.
Wouldn’t it be nice if our sporting directors had to come out and speak to the media openly too?
In any case, so far so good in the campaign to make money on Veiga. If he keeps playing every week they’ll surely make the deal permanent this summer.
