Spain host the Netherlands in the second leg of their UEFA Nations League quarter-final tie tonight.
La Roja rescued a result in Rotterdam on Thursday night after Mikel Merino’s stoppage-time equaliser. An entertaining encounter saw Spain lead early through Nico Williams, but the Dutch turned the game around to lead after efforts from Cody Gakpo and Tijjani Reijnders.
Jorrel Hato’s 81st-minute red card reduced the Netherlands to 10 men and Spain capitalised on their man advantage to level late on. The tie is perfectly poised heading into tonight’s return.
The draw with the Dutch extended Spain’s unbeaten record to over 12 months. Luis de la Fuente’s side have not lost in 17 games across all competitions.
Bournemouth teenager Dean Huijsen could make his full debut after an appearance off the bench on Thursday. Huijsen replaced the injured Pau Cubrasi, who has since withdrawn from the Spanish squad.
Merino will hope his last-gasp heroics earn the Arsenal midfielder the nod, though it’s likely he will again start from the bench with an otherwise unchanged lineup. Dani Olmo also impressed off the bench at De Kuip.
Spain predicted XI: Simon; Porro, Huijsen, Le Normand, Cucurella; Ruiz, Zubimendi, Pedri; Yamal, Morata, N. Williams.
