Everton and Fulham both hold an interest in signing Coventry City’s Milan van Ewijk this summer, Football League World has been told.
The 24-year-old right-back joined the Sky Blues from Heerenveen in the summer of 2023, and he has established himself as one of the top players in his position in the Championship over the past two seasons.
However, the failure to win promotion, following the heartbreaking play-off semi-final defeat to Sunderland, has cast doubt over van Ewijk’s future.
And, FLW can reveal that Everton and Fulham are looking at van Ewijk, with the two clubs feeling that a summer deal is possible for the Dutch right-back.
With Coventry set for another year in the Championship, they may not be in a position to resist a suitable offer for the ex-Ajax man, particularly if boss Frank Lampard wants more freedom to reshape the squad ahead of his first full season in charge.
It appears that the Sky Blues are already making plans to replace van Ewijk as well, with reports claiming that they are targeting Aston Villa’s Kaine Kesler-Hayden, who has just had a very impressive loan spell with Preston.
Coventry’s run of form under Lampard has been terrific, so it’s no surprise that Premier League clubs will be trying to take their key men after they missed out on promotion.
It’s becoming increasingly tough to compete in the modern game without parachute payments, so the Sky Blues will need to be open to player trading, and van Ewijk is someone they could make a decent profit on.
Despite his high-profile error against Sunderland in the play-offs, there’s no doubt that van Ewijk is a quality player, and you would back him to be able to make the step-up to the Premier League.
As well as being a good, aggressive defender, he is a constant outlet down the flank with his energy and work-rate. Plus, at 24, he is approaching his peak years, so you can understand why there is top-flight interest.
You would imagine that several of van Ewijk’s teammates are also attracting interest, as Coventry have been outstanding over the past six months, and it has proven there is a lot of talent in the group.
So, it will be intriguing to see what business does take place involving the Midlands outfit, but Lampard will hope that whatever does happen, he has a squad that is capable of pushing for promotion once again in the 25/26 campaign.
