Delano Burgzorg is back in the Championship after his loan spell with Huddersfield Town

Delano Burgzorg may struggle to make a consistent impact for Middlesbrough following his loan spell with Huddersfield Town last season.

That's according to Football League World's Huddersfield Town fan pundit, Graeme Rayner, who admits he did not expect the attacker to secure a move to a Championship club this summer.

Burgzorg spent the 2023/24 season on loan with the Terriers, from German top-flight side Mainz.

During his spell at The John Smith's Stadium, Burgzorg scored seven goals and provided two assists in 33 appearances in all competitions for the Terriers.

However, those contributions were not enough to prevent Huddersfield from suffering relegation from the Championship to League One at the end of the campaign.

Even so, Burgzorg himself will now be back in the second-tier of English football next season, in a move it seems Terriers fans may not have seen coming.

Huddersfield fan reacts to Delano Burgzorg Middlesbrough move

Last week, Middlesbrough confirmed that they had completed the signing of Burgzorg from Mainz in a permanent move.

The 25-year-old has moved to the club for an undisclosed fee, signing a four-year deal that secures his future at The Riverside Stadium until the end of the 2027/28 season.

Michael Carrick's side finished last season eighth in the Championship table, four points adrift of the play-off places.

They will likely therefore be aiming to again push for a top six spot next season, and as a result, Rayner seemingly would not have been expecting them to target Burgzorg this summer.

When asked if he is surprised that the attacker has earned a move to Middlesbrough after his performances for Huddersfield last season, the Terriers fan told Football League World:

"Delano Burgzorg has got talent. He stood out as being someone with talent on the ball in our team. But very quickly became one of our most frustrating players.

"Because, if you say he's got five touches he wants six, if you say he's got ten touches he wants 11, he always wants an extra touch, he always wants to beat his man one more time. He never knows when to release the ball.

"There was one game last year, and it was a critical game as all our games were, and he broke through and he had to do was square the ball to Jack Rudoni and we would have scored a vital goal, and he didn't do it, and that was the final straw, I think the fans turned on him. "So I am surprised that he's got a move to a team in the Championship, who will have watched him, and seen the same undoubted strengths but obvious flaws in his game as well. "A four-year deal feels like a long deal. I made a joke that I'm surprised the Middlesbrough chairman was able to sign the contract because I doubt Burgzorg would have passed him the pen.

"So good luck to him. I think he'll soon be found out and won't feature as he might like for them, I think he could be a squad player. I could be proven wrong but I very much doubt it."

Having completed that move, Burgzorg became 'Boro's second signing of the summer transfer window already.

The club have already announced a deal to re-sign right-back Luke Ayling on a permanent deal, following his successful spell on loan at The Riverside Stadium from Leeds United in the second half of last season.

Delano Burgzorg an interesting signing for 'Boro

It is certainly going to be intriguing to see just how things go for Burgzorg now that he has made that move to Middlesbrough.

There can be no denying that bringing in a player such as Burgzorg who has just been relegated from the Championship does feel like something of a gamble for 'Boro given their aims of promotion from the division.

However, there can be no denying that he did make some positive contributions for Huddersfield last season, and you wonder whether playing in what ought to be a stronger team could bring more out of him. If that is the case, this could turn out to be a useful signing for Middlesbrough.

However, if Burgzorg is unable to improve on his form at Huddersfield, it is hard to imagine him playing regularly for a team with loftier ambitions.

Indeed, the form of Emmanuel Latte Lath, and the fact that it seems 'Boro are also keen to further add to their attacking options this summer, means there will be plenty of competition for Burgzorg to get into the side.

As a result, giving him such a long contract may prove to make this a rather expensive deal, if as is suggested here, the attacker does find himself playing a bit part role for Middlesbrough.
