Liverpool boss Arne Slot has reaffirmed his trust in his team’s ability to stay at the top of the Premier League table, dismissing notions of “choking” under pressure as the title race heats up. Confidence in Mentality and Quality

Slot, who has lost just one game in his 50-match tenure across Feyenoord and Liverpool in 2024, emphasised his players’ resilience. That solitary defeat came in September against Nottingham Forest, a result that many saw as a blip in an otherwise remarkable run.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Manchester United at Anfield, Slot said:

“I have a lot of trust in the players in every aspect of football: their mentality, their quality on the ball, their work-rate. But for me it’s not about bringing it (the title) over the line because there are 20 games still left and still a long way to go.”

While Slot acknowledged Liverpool’s strong position, he warned against complacency, citing Chelsea’s shock midweek defeat to Ipswich as evidence of the unpredictable nature of English football.

“In the Eredivisie, you are 90 percent sure to win the league because it is nearly impossible to lose against the lower teams. But this week we have seen Chelsea lose against Ipswich, so that tells you it is impossible to look so far ahead.”

Slot’s journey from Feyenoord to Liverpool has been marked by challenges, including adapting to the Premier League’s unique demands. He contrasted the Eredivisie’s predictability with England’s competitiveness, stressing the importance of staying focused.

“It is possible in the Eredivisie, but impossible here because there are so many good teams. So it’s a good lead – but it’s not enough to be comfortable. That’s a nice way to say it,” Slot explained.

“I would have preferred to come in the summer as well – but with a six-week lead-up (pre-season). I came in here with a one-week lead-up because all the players were at the Euros.

“In another world I would have said, ‘okay, give me a pre-season where we have six weeks with all the players’. But you don’t always get the ideal circumstances, and this is part of our job.”

Slot’s pragmatic approach has allowed Liverpool to thrive under his leadership, blending tactical acumen with an ability to extract the best from his players.
