Arne Slot said he was delighted to welcome Alisson Becker back into the Liverpool side and hailed the goalkeeper as the ‘best in the world’.
The Brazilian made his return from injury during the 1-0 win at Girona in the Champions League on Tuesday evening. Alisson impressed as Liverpool recorded a fifth consecutive Champions League clean sheet, making five saves as the Reds came under pressure in Spain.
Liverpool’s victory saw the Merseysiders extend their perfect record in Europe to six wins from six games this season, with Slot’s side now five points clear at the top of the Champions League standings.
Slot was full of praise for how Alisson performed on his return after a spell on the sidelines and stated his belief that the shot-stopper is the best in world football.
“No, he definitely didn’t (look like he’d been away). I said a bit of a joke that maybe the players wanted to see how fit he really was, so to give him so much work,” the Dutchman said at his post-match press conference.
“But, of course, that was not our plan. He showed again today why I said so many times that he’s our first goalkeeper. That has nothing to do with Caoimhin [Kelleher] – he did so, so well.
“But Alisson has been so important for this club for so many years, for his country as well. [He] showed today that he’s probably one of the best, in my opinion the best goalkeeper in the world. And let’s hope he can keep continuing to bring these performances. Let’s hope even more that he can stay fit.”
