Sancho’s Roma Exit Stalls as Hojlund Pushes for Permanent Move

Manchester United’s transfer window manoeuvring continues to draw headlines, with Jadon Sancho and Rasmus Hojlund central to ongoing uncertainty at Old Trafford. Both players have been linked with moves away, yet the finer details are proving decisive in shaping their futures.

Sancho Holding Out Despite Roma Talks

Jadon Sancho’s situation remains unresolved after AS Roma submitted a bid worth £20m and held direct conversations with the winger. Despite the discussions, Sky Sports reported that Sancho “has decided he wants to explore other options” and that “it had nothing to do with personal terms”.

Roma’s interest was concrete, yet the England international remains cautious. Borussia Dortmund are among the clubs still monitoring developments. Sancho is one of several players United would be open to offloading, as the club seek balance in a squad that remains under construction under new management.

Hojlund Pushing for Clarity

The more pressing concern for many supporters is Rasmus Hojlund’s future. The striker has yet to find consistent footing in Manchester and, according to Sky Sports, “remains open to a move to AC Milan” but would “prefer a permanent move if he is to leave”.

This detail is crucial. Milan’s preference for a loan with an option contrasts with United’s stance, who “want a permanent element attached to any deal”. The club appear unwilling to sanction another temporary switch that could leave them in limbo 12 months down the line.

Amorim Urging Competition Within Squad

Ruben Amorim, who is only two games into his reign as United head coach, has been measured in his public comments. He did not dismiss the possibility of keeping Hojlund in Manchester, instead stressing competition for places. “He has to fight for his place. We will see what’s going to happen. Rasmus has the same characteristics as [Benjamin Sesko] so sometimes we need to choose,” Amorim explained.

Hojlund’s absence from the squad for the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at Old Trafford spoke volumes, although the new manager appears keen to retain flexibility rather than cut ties hastily.

Transfer Outlook Shaping United’s Season

The dual narratives of Sancho and Hojlund underline a broader theme at United. The club want to streamline the squad while ensuring that outgoings strengthen rather than weaken Amorim’s long-term project. With interest across Europe but no final agreements in place, the coming weeks could prove pivotal.

For Sancho, patience might yield a move to a destination of his choosing. For Hojlund, the question is whether United will meet his desire for a clean break or stand firm on their conditions.

This report is frustrating but also revealing. Sancho’s refusal to commit to Roma, despite clear interest, suggests he is still unsure about the direction of his career. At this point, supporters would rather see decisive action. A £20m fee might feel low for a player of his reputation, but the lack of consistency on the pitch means United cannot be too choosy.

The bigger concern is Hojlund. Many fans admired his work rate last season, yet he lacked clinical edge in key matches. Amorim’s words about him having “the same characteristics as Sesko” highlight the problem. Two players offering similar profiles is not what United need, especially with goals so hard to come by. If Hojlund himself wants a permanent move, then prolonging this saga with loans and options helps no one.

United’s defeat to Arsenal in the opening fixture under Amorim already raised questions about cutting edge up front. If Sancho goes and Hojlund follows, then Amorim must be backed with proper reinforcements before the window closes. It is too early to panic, but unless decisions are made swiftly, the season risks slipping into another cycle of uncertainty.
