According to a recent update from COPE, the Spanish Sports Administrative Court (CAS) has officially dismissed Osasuna’s complaint regarding Barcelona’s use of Inigo Martinez during a league clash between the two sides on 27 March.

Despite this setback, Osasuna are reportedly considering other legal avenues to pursue what they believe is a valid case.

The controversy began when Osasuna filed a formal complaint with the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) on 28 March, just a day after Barcelona defeated them 3-0.

The core of their argument centred on the interpretation of FIFA regulations regarding player eligibility during international release periods.

Specifically, the rule prohibits a player who has been called up by their national team from featuring for their club during the international window and for an additional five days, unless the player’s national federation explicitly permits it.

Point of the matter

Osasuna argued that Martinez, who had joined the Spain national team camp but returned early due to injury, should not have been allowed to feature in the match against them.

They pointed out what they see as a clear breach of protocol and questioned the consistency of the regulations, especially when compared with how similar cases have been handled, such as that of Bryan Zaragoza.

Despite presenting their case, the appeal was rejected by the RFEF, and now the CAS has backed that decision.

Osasuna are not giving up

However, Osasuna remain convinced that their interpretation of the rule is accurate and that Barcelona should face disciplinary consequences—specifically, a three-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player.

If Osasuna were to eventually succeed in their quest through other legal channels, it could have significant implications.

A three-point swing would see Osasuna leapfrog Rayo Vallecano in the standings, finishing level on 55 points with Celta Vigo.

As it stands, Barcelona’s La Liga title is not under threat, but Osasuna’s determination suggests this saga may not be over.
