Despite a valiant fightback from 2-0 down to 2-2, Venezia eventually capitulated 3-2 to Udinese in this chaotic thriller and lost Filip Stankovic to injury too.
The Friulani were stuttering after back-to-back defeats, with just three points from five rounds. Jesper Karlstrom was suspended, with Lautaro Giannetti, Isaak Touré, Keinan Davis, Kingsley Ehizibue and Maduka Okoye injured. Venezia were coming off draws with Parma and Verona, but remained in penultimate place with Michael Svoboda injured, plus Domen Crnigoj, Alfred Duncan, Marin Sverko and Richie Sagrado not fully fit. Joel Pohjanpalo wasn’t even on the bench ahead of his move to Palermo.
There was another blow for the Lagunari when they lost goalkeeper Stankovic to a knee injury after just 19 minutes, bringing on Jens Joronen.
The goalkeeper was called into action by a scorcher from Jurgen Ekkelenkamp, but was caught horribly off his line to flap wildly at the Hassane Kamara cross from the left, allowing Lorenzo Lucca to acrobatically volley in at the far post.
Joronen was at fault again for the second goal, crashing into a teammate punching the cross away meekly into the path of Sandi Lovric to volley in the rebound from 12 yards.

Venezia got themselves back into it when the Hans Nicolussi Caviglia hard into the near top corner from a very tricky angle took Razvan Sava by surprise.
Joronen kept the scoreline down on Lucca’s snapshot, but Venezia completed the comeback from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 when Cande flicked on a corner for Christian Gytkjaer to bundle over the line at the back stick.
However, Udinese weren’t done yet, as Oumar Solet dribbled down the left and squirmed between defenders to pull back from the by-line for Iker Bravo’s right-foot angled drive into the far bottom corner.
Venezia kept pushing, the Kike Perez cross nodded over the bar by John Yeboah, but Udinese held on for their first home win in several months.
