Francisco Conceicao’s goal from a Randal Kolo Muani assist allowed Juventus to win the Derby d’Italia, stop Inter becoming the new leaders and puts the Old Lady in joint fourth place.

The Nerazzurri had the opportunity to leapfrog Napoli and take top spot, while a win would put the Bianconeri level with Lazio in fourth place. Marcus Thuram was only fit for the bench, but Denzel Dumfries returned from suspension and Federico Dimarco shook off flu symptoms. Juve beat PSV Eindhoven 2-1 in the Champions League play-off and had to prepare for Wednesday’s second leg, with Douglas Luiz, Pierre Kalulu, Arek Milik, Gleison Bremer and Juan Cabal injured.

When these sides met back in October, the Bianconeri fought back from 4-2 down to draw a 4-4 thriller at San Siro.

It was a strong start from the visitors, who had a huge double chance when Michele Di Gregorio parried the Mehdi Taremi overhead kick, then Dumfries nodded a Lautaro Martinez cross over on the rebound.

Juventus also had a double opportunity soon after, as Yann Sommer got down to push away the Nico Gonzalez angled drive, then scrambled back to fingertip the Francisco Conceicao follow-up.

Randal Kolo Muani’s half-volley was deflected inches over, but Lautaro Martinez had to do better when ballooning the Dumfries assist over from 10 yards as Juve gave the ball away cheaply.

Dumfries shrugged off Nicolò Savona to sprint down the right and smash his shot against the outside of the near post on 44 minutes.

Andrea Cambiaso made his return after several weeks out and Marcus Thuram was also introduced for Inter, playing with painkillers after an ankle injury.

Tim Weah made a decisive tackle on Taremi’s dangerous counter-attack, while Di Gregorio fingertipped a Dumfries effort onto the upright only after a Marcus Thuram foul in the build-up.

Teun Koopmeiners nodded wide from a Francisco Conceicao cross, but Juventus broke the deadlock on 74 minutes.

Kolo Muani gathered a loose ball on the edge of the area, spun round to extricate himself from a crowd of defenders and when blocked off, it landed at the feet of Conceicao to sweep into the far bottom corner with the inside of the left boot from 12 yards, through Benjamin Pavard’s legs.

It was so nearly 2-0 moments later, as the Koopmeiners angled drive had beaten Sommer only to be cleared off the line by Dumfries.

Marcus Thuram nodded over from a promising position and Piotr Zielinski’s shot was charged down, but Sommer also fingertipped a Kolo Muani effort over the bar in stoppages.

Thuram threatened again, his chest and volley on the turn just off target, but it is Inter’s third defeat of the season in Serie A.
