A deflected Morten Thorsby effort allowed Genoa to get the better of Parma to secure their first home victory of the season.

There was only one point separating these sides going into the second half of the season, both hovering just above the danger zone. Both also had an injury crisis, the hosts missing Vitinha, Brooke Norton-Cuffy, Caleb Ekuban, Ruslan Malinovskyi and Honest Ahanor. Meanwhile, Gianluca Di Chiara, Yordan Osorio, Nahuel Estevez, Adrian Bernabé, Mateusz Kowalski, Alessandro Circati and Gabriel Charpentier didn’t make the trip, but Dennis Man returned to the bench after a back issue. Alessandro Vogliacco and Woyo Coulibaly were left out pending transfers.

New Genoa owner Dan Sucu was in the stands at Marassi for the first time and he almost saw a goal on 22 minutes when a corner landed at the feet of Johan Vasquez from 12 yards, but his first attempt was charged down by Emanuele Valeri and the rebound parried by Zion Suzuki.

Ange Yoann Bonny drilled wide on the counter-attack and Andrea Pinamonti’s header hit the side-netting from point-blank range on a Fabio Miretti cross. There was a blow for Vieira’s men when Milan Badelj pulled up with a hamstring problem on the stroke of half-time.

Nicola Leali pushed a bobbling Pontus Almqvist volley round the post, but Genoa took the lead with a stroke of luck. Miretti’s inspired pass between two players released Frendrup to shoot from 12 yards, his finish took a huge deflection off Enrico Delprato to loop up past the helpless Zion Suzuki into the far top corner.

The hosts looked like getting closer to a goal than Parma did an equaliser, Suzuki palming the Lior Kassa effort over the bar from a Stefano Sabelli cross.
