Calhanoglu has a backup in the Inter squad in the form of Asllani. However, the Albanian is still 22 years of age and has yet to fully convince as an understudy.

Before the international break, Asllani was also unavailable due to an injury concern.

Therefore, the likes of Nicolo Barella and Piotr Zielinski started matches in holding midfield.

Aside from a wild 4-4 Serie draw with Juventus, Inter won the matches in which Calhanoglu was out.

But there were cracks on show in the team’s performances without Calhanoglu in the control room.

Tomorrow, Asllani will have the chance to prove that he can fill the 30-year-old’s shoes.

And Inter coach Simone Inzaghi will be hoping that the Albanian can give a convincing response in the circumstances,
