Wolverhampton Wanderers picked up their first win in the 2024/25 Premier League campaign after beating Southampton 2-0 at Molineux on Saturday (9 November).

Wolves made a strong start after Pablo Sarabia opened the scoring in the second minute. In the second half, Matheus Cunha scored a spectacular goal to secure all three points for Gary O’Neil’s side.

While they still remain in the relegation zone, the victory takes them closer to safety. Most importantly, it will give them huge confidence going forward as the pressure is now lifted off their shoulders.

Paul Robinson praised Cunha’s effort, saying it was a bit of magic from the 25-year-old forward, and Sky Sports pundit Michael Dawson also joined the party by showing his appreciation for the wonderful strike.

What Michael Dawson has said about Matheus Cunha’s strike

Southampton felt that Cameron Archer was fouled in the build-up to Cunha’s goal, but video footage showed that there was minimal contact.

It was a superb strike from 30 yards out, but could Aaron Ramsdale have done better? Dawson hailed Cunha as “dangerous” on Sky Sports, adding that it was a “sensational” strike.

Dawson said: “Cunha, he is dangerous. Everything that’s good have come from Wolves, it’s been from him.

“Lemina plays into Cunha from 25 yards outside the box just to the right hand side. He turns. He looks. He lets it rip. Straight into the top corner. Ramsdale has absolutely no chance. What a goal. Sensational.”

Cunha was outstanding v Southampton

It was a massive win for Wolves, and Cunha was arguably their best player on the pitch.

He had earlier set up Sarabia’s opener and then settled the nerves with a spectacular strike to earn all three points.

Southampton enjoyed the lion-share of possession, but it was Wolves who made the best use of their chances. They were direct and pressed hard to nullify Southamptom’s territorial advantage in the second half.

Wolves had not kept a clean sheet in the league since February, and there was a sense of big relief in the stadium once the final whistle blew.

O’Neil’s situation would have become untenable if Wolves had lost. But they must push the reset button and build from here after the international break.
