Scottish giants hold talks over joining Women's Super League | OneFootball

Celtic and Rangers have reportedly held initial talks about breaking away from the SWPL and joining the Women's Super League in England.

That is according to a report from The Times which details discussions that have taken place between the Scottish giants and Nikki Doucet, who oversees operations at the company which runs the WSL.

She is eager to find ways to expand the women's game and as a result, there is being serious consideration given to welcoming the Glasgow duo to the league.

Celtic won the newly-revamped Scottish Women's Premier League, which was formed in 2022, last season for the first time in their history and are competing in the group stage of the women's Champions League - another club first.

Previously, Glasgow City had been the dominant force in the Scottish women's game, going on a record run of 13 straight titles over the last decade.

Last season, Rangers held informal talks with the FA over whether such a move would be feasible and those conversations have now continued with the league's governing body.

No official approach has been made by either club or the WSL to the SWPL or Scottish FA, who would have to give the green light to any serious proposal, and the likelihood of an agreement is described as 'unlikely' at this time.

Clubs wishing to leave the Scottish top flight are required to serve a two-season notice period, meaning such a move is several years off if talks progress positively.
