Former Italian champions Sampdoria were relegated to the third tier of Italian football yesterday evening after drawing 0-0 in their visit to Juve Stabia on the last matchday of Serie B.
Crowned Italian champions in 1990/91, the historic Italian club only needed a win this Tuesday to play a relegation play-off. However, after only picking up a point I Blucerchiati have been relegated to Serie C – the third Italian division – for the first time in its history.
Samp have gone through several managers this season with Andrea Pirlo, Andrea Sottil, Leonardo Semplici, and Alberico Evani all having stints in charge and former player Roberto Mancini also helped out a consultant, but they couldn't prevent the team dropping further down just two years after being relegated from Serie A.
While there was desolation among Sampdoria fans, Genoa supporters took to the streets during the night to celebrate their rivals' relegation.
