Same Old Same Old As Rangers Continue What Went Before

We are seeing Rangers’ interest in what can only be described as journeyman players, or overpriced, quote-unquote, untapped gems. The fact is, this isn’t quite the Rangers revolution under Russell Martin that some fans may have hoped would transpire, and in the end we are seeing much the same level potentially being targeted as we had before, arguably even worse.

In order for Rangers to get any better, it is quite a basic premise that we need better players. Heck, we need a better manager, but that one’s not happening. But we certainly need better players, and being linked with Championship mid-table fodder in Darling, or lower-league Belgian players like Frigan, isn’t exactly the step forward that we’re looking for.

We’re sure the usuals will say along the lines of how early it is in the window and give them time. We pre-empt these guys and gals wherever we can, because we know they’re there. But we’re not exactly inspired by what we’re seeing. Yes, the window is not open, but if we look at that lot across the road, they’re making roads to improve their team considerably already.

We don’t know what the budget actually is. All we know is it’s a significant chunk of £20 million. But that’s hardly exactly a revolution in itself. Players, decent players, are basically £6 million plus. We’re not talking pennies, unless of course we get quality free agents. Of course free agency is what Harry Darling would be under, but he’s hardly high quality. As Walter once signed, and as we all vividly remember, the Old Master’s level was always Premier League. Ugo Ehiogu, David Weir, this is a quality player and that’s all it took to overhaul Rangers in 2007. Premier League standard. But nowadays it’s League One and Championship, or Lower Continental.

Nothing has changed under the new ownership. We’re still going for the same fodder that we did before. There is nothing revolutionary about Russell Martin at this point. It is pretty much the same movie repeating itself over and over.

Isn’t that the definition of insanity?
