My kids have recently educated me on the concept of rage bait.

Newcastle United had the great pleasure of ex-Mackem Sam Allardyce, when he became custodian of our team in 2007.

Lasting one transfer window (Geremi and Mark Viduka each on £100,000 a week wages, Alan Smith, Joey Barton Cacapa…) and five months of ‘football’ on the pitch.

Sending teams out to try and get a draw. Sam Allardyce belatedly sacked in January 2008.

Maybe that’s the early days of rage bait?

Returning to August 2025.

Sam Allardyce, England’s greatest manager and in line for the Real Madrid job one day…is now advising King Eddie and the Newcastle United owners on what is the best solution with the Alexander Isak situation.

“August is running out, transfer window shuts in August.

“Try and get the best you can and the club (Newcastle United) are going to have to pay over the odds, because everybody who wants to sell a player to Newcastle now, is going to inflate their price. If you are lucky (inflate it) by only 20 per cent. Maybe even more.

“So what was going to cost you £60million will cost you £90million now.

“So you just have to stomach it and pay for it, if the player is the right one to replace Isak, who probably won’t be as good, but certainly will make a good contribution to Newcastle.”

Sell Alexander Isak now, Sam Allardyce says…

He reckons, if a player’s value is £60million then Newcastle United will have to pay an additional 20 per cent, making the price £90million instead (according to Allardyce).

Sam’s capacity to advise the Newcastle United owners on the economics and business side of football (ED: And mathematics!), is on the same level as his managerial credentials.
