This is according to a fresh update from BBC Radio Manchester Sport on Friday evening, as the Whites hierarchy continue to find a successor for the recently departed Ian Evatt.

Evatt was dismissed at the Toughsheet Community Stadium on Wednesday morning after 261 games in charge, following a 2-1 defeat to Charlton Athletic in Greater Manchester.

A handful of names have since emerged as front-runners for the vacancy, with Schumacher immediately one of those, but now the Liverpudlian potentially finds himself up against his former colleague, having worked alongside each other at Bury and Plymouth Argyle.

Ryan Lowe emerges as latest contender for Bolton Wanderers job

Unsurprisingly, in the fallout of the aforementioned Evatt's departure, numerous names have been linked with the Bolton job.

It was initially reported by Alan Nixon on Wednesday that Schumacher was in contention for the role, and that the 40-year-old is keen on making a swift return to management, having been linked with an array of jobs following his controversial dismissal from Stoke City in mid-September.

Furthermore, the experienced Steve Evans, who has since responded to such speculation ahead of Rotherham United's away trip to Burton Albion on Saturday, was also name-dropped in such reports alongside Stephen Robinson.

There had also been surprise suggestions of a reunion with Sam Allardyce, before the 70-year-old ruled himself out of contention on the latest episode of his 'No Tippy Tappy Football' Podcast on Thursday.

And, in the latest development regarding Sharon Brittan's managerial hunt, Lowe is now said to be on Bolton's radar alongside the aforementioned Schumacher, with the 46-year-old still out of work having left North West rivals, Preston North End, after the opening game of the Championship season.

Ryan Lowe would be a shrewd appointment for Bolton Wanderers

As is the case with several other potential candidates, Lowe would be a shrewd appointment for Bolton, having impressed massively during his spells at Gigg Lane and Home Park, with the second of those eventually landing him the gig at Deepdale in December 2021.

Lowe was able to consolidate the Pilgrims' position in League One during the 2020/21 campaign after winning promotion from the fourth tier, before leaving the club in sixth position at the time of his departure, having won 10 of their opening 20 games.

Overall, at League One level, the Scouser has amassed 1.12 points per game over 88 matches, winning 29 of those.

Bolton's season is far from over, as they find themselves just three points behind Reading in the top six.

And, whilst the possibility of Lowe and Schumacher working together again would be a more exciting proposition for supporters, either of the duo being appointed individually would also signal strong intentions across the remaining 20 league outings.
